Mobile apps

Building a native iOS or Android app over business data: onboarding, offline sync against an OData service, device features, and the client that runs on the phone. Distinct from a web app opened in a phone's browser; operating a UI5 app with a finger is touch operation.

Overview

SAP SHIPS

The Mobile Development Kit builds a cross-platform app from metadata and JavaScript that is translated to native code at runtime on iOS and Android, deployed to SAP Mobile Services, which handles onboarding, authentication, offline and lifecycle management and pushes app updates without a new code-signing round. The SAP BTP SDKs for iOS and Android are there for apps written natively.

Not covered: At the generic client. SAP Mobile Services Client from the app stores is for testing and proofs of concept, so a production app needs a branded client built with the MDK SDK or the Cloud Build service, and a control MDK does not ship is an extension control written in TypeScript.

THE COMMUNITY ADDS

SAP's services beyond the core cover other ways to a mobile app: Agentry for metadata-driven apps over an SAP back end, and SAP Build Apps for native apps built visually. The community side is a generic native shell for ABAP-served UI, the abap2UI5 mobile shell, which loads one abap2UI5 endpoint in a WebView and reaches the phone's scanner, push token and biometric check through a bridge; its maintainers are abap2UI5.
