mcp-sap-docs
An MCP server over seventeen cloned SAP documentation repositories — ABAP keyword docs, capire, OpenUI5, Cloud SDK, BTP — searched with BM25 and prebuilt embeddings fused by reciprocal rank fusion.
An agent asked an SAP question answers from training data unless something puts the documentation in front of it. This clones the documentation rather than scraping it: seventeen repositories carried as git submodules — ABAP keyword documentation in standard and cloud variants, ABAP cheat sheets and RAP tutorials, capire, OpenUI5, Cloud SDK, the SAP style guides, the BTP Terraform provider — indexed at build time into a SQLite file holding both an FTS5 keyword index and precomputed all-MiniLM-L6-v2 embeddings. search fuses the two rankings with reciprocal rank fusion and returns document ids; fetch returns the text behind one. Three online sources sit on top and are on by default — SAP Help, SAP Community through the Khoros LiQL API, and Software Heroes — and includeOnline=false, or a container run with --network none, removes them. Beside search it carries a version axis: abap_feature_matrix reports whether an ABAP feature is available from 7.40 to LATEST, and ui5_version_diff lists FEATURE, FIX and DEPRECATED entries between UI5 versions. One codebase ships two profiles, sap-docs and abap, selected by the MCP_VARIANT environment variable or an .mcp-variant file; the ABAP profile adds abap_lint. Local stdio is the default, and both profiles also run as streamable HTTP and are published as public read-only endpoints on the maintainer's own domain.

PracticalFunctional boundary
It reads documentation, never a system: nothing in it opens a package.json, a CDS model or an ABAP client, so a question about what your own project does has to be answered elsewhere. The offline half is only as fresh as the submodules the last build pinned, and the index answers where something is written down rather than which of two packages fits a task.

Four demos follow: GitHub Copilot alone explaining an ABAP report from a Git repository, @ui5/mcp-server reading an OpenUI5 sample app and converting it to TypeScript, mcp-sap-docs grounding Terraform files for a BTP subaccount the presenter had not written before, and arc-1 with Copilot in Eclipse tracing why a title longer than 40 characters is rejected and proposing the DDIC-allowed length instead. It ends on a skill that migrates an SAP Gateway project on an ECC system to RAP on S/4HANA step by step, and on a rule Marian Zeis gives for servers written for internal use: keep them read-only, because what the agent is short of is context.published 2026-10-16Marian Zeis, YouTube — SAP Developers playlists
- Before You Upgrade S/4HANA: Static UI5 Checks with MCPBefore You Upgrade S/4HANA: Static UI5 Checks with MCPA UI5 version upgrade checked against one app by pairing two MCP servers: the ui5_version_diff tool added to mcp-sap-docs, which reads a bundle from ui5-lib-diff downloaded once at setup and filters it by version range, change type, library or query text, and @ui5/mcp-server, whose get_project_info, get_version_info, run_ui5_linter and run_manifest_validation say what the app uses and what fails. Run with a ui5-versions-upgrade.md skill on the legacy app from From SEGW and Legacy UI5 to RAP with ARC-1, from SAPUI5 1.84.59 to 1.147.2, the diff range held 985 deprecations and 961 What's New entries, and the linting and manifest validation narrowed that to findings in this app, among them jQuery.sap.require, synchronous bootstrap, the sap_belize theme, sap.m.MessagePage and an old manifest _version. The checks read the source in a local checkout and never the deployed app, so the report is a first pass: a changelog entry is not proof that a workaround can be deleted, and the app still has to be run and tested.published 2026-05-20Marian Zeis, blog.zeis.de — Marian Zeis
- How I Use AI for Development and Why Context MattersHow I Use AI for Development and Why Context MattersPart one of the AI ABAP development series traces a move from pasting ChatGPT output and error messages back and forth to tools that search, read docs and inspect files themselves, and holds that the context around a model decides more in real projects than benchmark results do. In SAP work the grounding comes from mcp-sap-docs, which brings SAP Help, GitHub repositories, style guides and DSAG guidelines into the session, and context for changing a class also means the tables it uses, the classes it calls and similar implementations. Agentic autonomy is a slider set per project, with the time saved on typing moved into planning and review, and the post stops before ABAP: SAP's MCP servers for UI5, CAP and Fiori (@ui5/mcp-server, @cap-js/mcp-server, @sap-ux/fiori-mcp-server) sit in off-stack work that git and pipelines already gate, and the harder ABAP case is left to the next part.published 2026-04-20Marian Zeis, blog.zeis.de — Marian Zeis

- Building an Enterprise-Ready SAP AI Agent with Open SourceBuilding an Enterprise-Ready SAP AI Agent with Open SourceA self-hosted chat agent for SAP systems: LibreChat as UI and orchestrator with Entra ID sign-in and SharePoint connected, a local LLM through Ollama, and two MCP servers, mcp-sap-docs for public documentation and the ADT MCP server vibing-steampunk for the system itself. The ADT server runs in its read-only mode under a technical user with display authorisations only, so the agent can find a function module and pull its source, or locate a RAP business object with its behaviour definition and projection view, but cannot change anything. Two workflows show it, explaining what BAPI_DISPUTE_CREATE does in one system and planning a RAP action from a PDF specification, where the generated ABAP is copied into Eclipse by hand; the full setup is in the marianfoo/llm-client-sap-system-integration-sharepoint repository.published 2026-03-03Marian Zeis, blog.zeis.de — Marian Zeis
- Finally: An MCP Server for ABAPFinally: An MCP Server for ABAPAnnounces the ABAP variant of mcp-sap-docs, published at mcp-abap.marianzeis.de for GitHub Copilot's Agent Mode in ADT for Eclipse, which the post names as the trigger, with ABAP knowledge still a recurring problem in the models. Documentation irrelevant to ABAP was removed from the SAP docs server and the ABAP Keyword Documentation, the DSAG ABAP Development Guidelines and the ABAP Style Guide were added, with search reaching past the local index to SAP Community posts and SAP Help. Copilot in Eclipse is where the post puts the weight, because SAP Joule for Developers, ABAP AI capabilities in Eclipse is not available for S/4HANA on-premise systems; an update of 2026-02-05 adds Software Heroes as an online source and an abap_feature_matrix tool that checks feature availability across releases and ABAP Cloud, and the server runs hosted or locally with Node or Docker.published 2026-02-04Marian Zeis, blog.zeis.de — Marian Zeis

Architecture Overview
- Upstream source of truth:
mcp-sap-docs - One-way sync target:
abap-mcp-server - Search defaults to BM25 keyword ranking; optional semantic scores are combined via Reciprocal Rank Fusion (RRF)
- Embeddings model:
Xenova/all-MiniLM-L6-v2(~90 MB, cached indist/models/)
Variant Selection
Resolution order:
MCP_VARIANTenvironment variable.mcp-variantfile in repo root- fallback:

Examples:
# Run as full sap-docs profile
MCP_VARIANT=sap-docs npm run setup
MCP_VARIANT=sap-docs npm run build
MCP_VARIANT=sap-docs npm run start:streamable
# Run as ABAP profile
MCP_VARIANT=abap npm run setup
MCP_VARIANT=abap npm run build
MCP_VARIANT=abap npm run start:streamable
Search Behavior
search performs fused retrieval over:
- Offline FTS index (local submodule content)
- Optional online sources (
includeOnline=true):- SAP Help
- SAP Community
- Software Heroes content search (EN/DE merge + dedupe)
Ranking and filtering highlights:
- BM25 search with optional semantic ranking — keyword and meaning, fused via RRF
- Reciprocal Rank Fusion (RRF) across offline and online sources
- Source-level boosts from metadata
includeSamplescan remove sample-heavy sourcesabapFlavor(standard/cloud/auto) filters official ABAP docs libraries while keeping non-ABAP sourcessourcescan restrict offline libraries explicitly
Fetch content limits
Community post bodies are returned as Markdown, including code, links, images and tables. Clients that previously parsed raw Community HTML must consume Markdown. Document IDs, source URLs and response schemas are unchanged. If conversion fails, that post keeps its original HTML with a notice; other posts in the same batch are still returned.
SAP Help and Community fetches default to 75,000 characters. Shortened results
include metadata.truncation with exact loss counts. Self-hosted servers can set
MAX_CONTENT_LENGTH before startup; see content size limits.
Hybrid Search
Offline search defaults to BM25 keyword ranking. Optional semantic ranking uses
Xenova/all-MiniLM-L6-v2 to reorder the lexical candidates; it does not search outside
that candidate pool. Enable it explicitly with EMBEDDING_WEIGHT=0.7 after building
complete document and section embeddings and evaluating your own queries.
Embeddings are stored in docs.sqlite, with the model cached in dist/models/.
Old or partial embedding artifacts fall back to lexical ranking with a rebuild warning.
See docs/HYBRID-SEARCH.md for setup, limitations and costs.
Offline-Only Mode
search includes online sources by default. To run offline-only, use:
- local index/submodules only (
npm run setup+npm run build) includeOnline=falsein eachsearchrequest
Example search request body:
{
"query": "RAP draft",
"k": 8,
"includeOnline": false
}
Docker (offline-only)
Run the container with host binding and call search with includeOnline=false:
docker run --rm -p 3122:3122 \
-e MCP_VARIANT=sap-docs \
-e MCP_PORT=3122 \
-e MCP_HOST=0.0.0.0 \
mcp-sap-docs
For strict air-gapped execution, disable container networking:
docker run --rm --network none -p 3122:3122 \
-e MCP_VARIANT=sap-docs \
-e MCP_PORT=3122 \
-e MCP_HOST=0.0.0.0 \
mcp-sap-docs
Notes:
- With
--network none, online fetches are impossible by runtime isolation. - Startup may log warnings for online prefetch attempts (for example ABAP feature matrix); this does not prevent offline
searchusage.
Quick Start (Local)
npm ci
npm run setup
npm run build
npm run setup updates the selected variant's documentation sources to their
configured branch tips and builds the index, including embeddings. Nested
submodules stay at the commits recorded by those sources. To omit optional nested
repositories (for example when their upstream URLs require SSH credentials), use
SKIP_NESTED_SUBMODULES=1 npm run setup in Bash, including Git Bash on Windows.
npm run setup:submodules instead checks out the repository's recorded source
commits. It does not fetch the latest documentation or apply variant filtering.
Run npm run setup when refreshing an existing installation.
Start server modes:
# MCP stdio
npm start
# HTTP status/dev server
npm run start:http
# MCP streamable HTTP
npm run start:streamable
Default ports by variant:
sap-docs: HTTP3001, streamable3122abap: HTTP3002, streamable3124
Health checks:
curl -sS http://127.0.0.1:3122/health | jq .
curl -sS http://127.0.0.1:3001/status | jq .
Use variant-specific ports when running abap profile.
Build and Setup Scripts
Script names remain shared (setup, build, start, start:streamable).
Behavior changes by variant config:
setup.shonly initializes variant-allowed submodulesbuild-indexonly includes variant-allowed librariesbuild-ftsonly indexes variant-allowed libraries
This keeps abap faster and smaller without maintaining a separate build script set.
Docker
Build image for a variant:
# sap-docs image
docker build --build-arg MCP_VARIANT=sap-docs -t mcp-sap-docs .
# abap image
docker build --build-arg MCP_VARIANT=abap -t abap-mcp-server .
Run streamable server:
# sap-docs
docker run --rm -p 3122:3122 \
-e MCP_VARIANT=sap-docs \
-e MCP_PORT=3122 \
mcp-sap-docs
# abap

SAP BTP Cloud Foundry
For BTP CF, the recommended sap-docs path is to deploy the maintained
ghcr.io/marianfoo/mcp-sap-docs:sap-docs image with MTA. Cloud Foundry only
pulls and runs the prepared image, including embedding artifacts. Ranking remains
lexical unless a positive EMBEDDING_WEIGHT is explicitly configured.
See docs/BTP-CF-DEPLOYMENT.md for the public-first
deployment guide. Start with
Deployment Options and Tradeoffs
to choose between MTA, direct cf push, custom registry images, and refresh
setup.
One-Way Sync to abap-mcp-server
This repository contains direct sync automation:
- Workflow:
.github/workflows/sync-to-abap-main.yml - Script:
scripts/sync-to-abap.sh
Flow:
- Release Please publishes a release in
mcp-sap-docsafter its release PR is merged - The release workflow explicitly dispatches the ABAP sync workflow
- The sync workflow clones
abap-mcp-server - Tracked upstream files are synced (with exclude rules), then the ABAP overlay is applied
.mcp-variantis forced toabapand ABAP package identity is patched- A sync commit is pushed to
abap-mcp-server/main - That push triggers the ABAP deployment workflow
The sync workflow also supports manual runs, including dry runs and a custom target branch.
Only pushes to the downstream main branch trigger automatic deployment.
Required secret in mcp-sap-docs repo:
ABAP_REPO_SYNC_TOKEN: a dedicated token with access to push code and workflow changes toabap-mcp-server. Keep this separate fromGITHUB_TOKEN, whose pushes do not trigger subsequent workflows.
Deployment Model
mcp-sap-docs: owns release versions and dispatches its deployment and ABAP sync when a release is createdabap-mcp-server: deploys on pushes tomain, including upstream sync commits, or viaworkflow_dispatch
The downstream repository does not publish GitHub releases. Its deployment must
therefore listen for sync pushes, not release: published. Upstream releases
control when automatic syncs occur.
The ABAP deployment workflow is maintained in
sync/abap.overlay/.github/workflows/deploy-abap-mcp-server.yml. Change that
upstream overlay so the fix persists across future syncs.
After merging a deployment fix, publish the next upstream release or manually run
sync-to-abap-main.yml against upstream main. Confirm that the downstream deploy
run succeeds and that https://mcp-abap.marianzeis.de/health reports the version in
the synced ABAP package.json; a successful sync alone does not confirm deployment.
PM2 Runtime
ecosystem.config.cjs is variant-aware and resolves:
- process names
- ports
- deploy path
from config/variants/*.json.

Curated SAP tutorials
The SAP Docs profile includes 32 additional official tutorials in
sap-tutorials-ai, sap-tutorials-hana, and sap-tutorials-integration:
AI Core orchestration V2 and grounding, HANA Cloud SQLScript and CAP, Integration
Suite MCP Gateway, and Cloud Transport Management. The existing Fiori OPA guide
is still available separately.
Use product and task terms, for example SAP HANA Cloud SQLScript stored procedure tutorial or SAP Integration Suite MCP Gateway tutorial. Use sources to narrow
an ambiguous search; leave it unset for cross-source discovery. Tutorials provide
worked examples and retain their prerequisites; product and SDK documentation
remain the reference for detailed API behavior.
The explicit selection is in config/tutorials.json.
Fetched tutorials include readable option labels, absolute asset/prerequisite
links, and their published page URL. The unpublished transport overview links to
its official GitHub source. Source content and its original attribution are
preserved; the original tutorial repository's license still applies.
