SAP-samples/hana-cli-claude-plugin

A Claude Code plugin that registers the MCP server of hana-cli, so Claude Code can work on SAP HANA Cloud and on-premise SAP HANA databases.

The repository holds a plugin manifest and an .mcp.json entry, no server code: the entry starts the hana-cli-mcp binary of the hana-cli npm package with npx, so the tools are those of SAP-samples/hana-developer-cli-tool-example, which its README says it wraps. The README counts 166 MCP tools and groups them as schema exploration, object inspection, data import and export, performance monitoring, security, backup and recovery, system administration, developer tools and discovery. It gives two ways in: /plugin install with the repository address from inside Claude Code, or the same .mcp.json entry added to a project by hand. Connection details are read from the credential sources the README lists in order, or set with npx hana-cli connect, and it names Node.js 20.19.0 or later and a HANA database with credentials as prerequisites. It adds a registration path for Claude Code and nothing else; the commands, their options and the database connection stay in the CLI it wraps.

Conditions

PolicySAP API Policy 4.2026a§ 1.1, 1.2, 2.2.2from Agent access to your systemsAn MCP server uses SAP APIs to supply tools, resources or data to an agent.
  • § 1.1 Published APIs. Published APIs are made available for the documented purposes identified by SAP, including integration, extensions and data exchange.
  • § 1.2 Non-Published APIs. Customer and third-party applications must not access non-published APIs except where documentation permits it or SAP otherwise authorizes it.
  • § 2.2.2 AI call sequences and data extraction. Outside SAP-endorsed architectures, data services or expressly identified pathways, the policy prohibits specified agentic API use and systematic or large-scale extraction.

MCP does not replace the API's documented-use boundary. Check that every endpoint is published for the intended use and whether the policy's AI-call or extraction provisions apply to the design.

Install

In Claude Code, run:

/plugin install https://github.com/SAP-samples/hana-cli-claude-plugin

Or install manually by adding this to your project's .mcp.json:

{
  "hana-cli": {

Prerequisites

  • Node.js 20.19.0 or later
  • SAP HANA database (Cloud or on-premise) with connection credentials

Database Connection

The plugin connects to your SAP HANA database using standard connection methods. Configure credentials via any of these (checked in order):

  1. default-env-admin.json — admin connections
  2. .cdsrc-private.json — SAP CAP dynamic binding
  3. .env / VCAP_SERVICES — environment variables
  4. default-env.json — default connection file
  5. ~/.hana-cli/default.json — global default

Use the hana-cli connect command to set up credentials interactively:

npx hana-cli connect

Or use the __projectContext parameter on any tool call to specify connection details dynamically.

Example Usage

Once installed, just ask Claude:

  • "What tables are in my HANA database?"
  • "Show me the most expensive SQL statements"
  • "Export the PRODUCTS table to CSV"
  • "Run a health check on my database"
  • "Find duplicate records in the ORDERS table"
  • "Profile the data quality of CUSTOMERS"
  • "What users have excessive privileges?"
