Application runtimes

The environments that execute application code and manage its processes, containers or managed language runtime. Getting a build onto one is deployment; serving a frontend’s built static files is app hosting.

Overview

What runs an application's code once it is on BTP: a Cloud Foundry org and space with buildpacks, a managed Kubernetes cluster in Kyma, or an ABAP system in the ABAP environment. Getting a build onto one of them is deployment, and serving a UI's built static files is app hosting.

SAP SHIPS

SAP ships three runtimes on BTP: SAP BTP, Cloud Foundry Runtime runs polyglot cloud-native applications in orgs and spaces, SAP BTP, Kyma runtime is a fully managed Kubernetes runtime for containerized microservices and serverless Functions, and the SAP BTP ABAP environment runs ABAP Cloud apps and RAP-based OData services on SAP HANA Cloud.

Not covered: At the language each runtime takes: on Cloud Foundry SAP's own buildpacks are Java, Node.js and Python, with PHP, Ruby and Go left to community buildpacks, and the ABAP environment takes ABAP written to the ABAP Cloud development model, a cloud-optimized ABAP language with standard APIs.
