Deployment

Getting an application onto a runtime and keeping it there: build descriptors, deployment topology, service bindings and lifecycle operations. The target runtime determines how the application is packaged and configured.

Overview

InCAPassessed

Getting an application onto a runtime and keeping it there — build descriptors, deployment topology and lifecycle on Cloud Foundry or Kubernetes. Cloud Foundry is buildpacks, a manifest and services bound by name; Kyma is Kubernetes with SAP's modules, containers and Helm. Which of the two a subaccount runs decides how every service is bound, how logs are shipped and which tooling applies: an MTA targets one, a Helm chart the other.

@cap-js/cap-operator-plugin Generates Helm charts for deploying CAP applications with the CAP Operator on Kubernetes.

@sap/cds-dk The command line client and development toolkit for CAP projects, with the commands cds build, cds deploy, cds watch and cds add among them.

Not covered: It stops at generating descriptors. Pipelines, environment promotion, and the operational shape of a landscape are left to you and to the platform you chose.

On BTP deployment is the runtime's half of the question: an MTA for Cloud Foundry or Kubernetes objects for Kyma, then routes and autoscaling once the application runs. What cds build generates for either is read on the CAP door.

SAP SHIPS

Cloud Foundry deploys a multitarget application from its descriptor through the MultiApps CF CLI plugin and SAP Cloud Deployment service, and Application Autoscaler adds or removes instances by policy. Kyma runs an OCI image described as Kubernetes objects.

Not covered: At the runtime. An MTA descriptor targets Cloud Foundry and Kubernetes objects target Kyma, each written per application. Moving MTA archives across subaccounts is done by SAP Cloud Transport Management, or by a pipeline, which the XP265 workshop gives to SAP Continuous Integration and Delivery.

Application Autoscaler scales instances, SAP Cloud Transport Management and Content Agent move MTA archives and content between accounts, and Solution Lifecycle Management manages MTA-based Solutions in the Neo environment. Core-only rests on these services and on the runtimes' own tooling as SAP's tutorials describe it.

Licence1

LicenceSAP Developer License Agreement 3.2 CAP§ 1, 2AlwaysA productive CAP customer application is deployed using materials covered by this agreement.
  • § 1 License. Productive customer applications are limited to SAP BTP or another SAP-licensed platform, and mass extraction to a non-SAP product is restricted except where solely required for SAP interoperability.
  • § 2 Intellectual Property. The agreement retains SAP's rights in the covered materials and limits making APIs, tools or software available to third parties, while preserving ownership of customer applications subject to SAP's underlying rights.

The CAP-specific agreement makes the deployment platform part of the permitted productive-use condition, so deployment choices need the applicable agreement checked rather than treated as purely technical.

What changed — and what it makes stale1
@sap/cds-dk 8.9.0, CAP

Before this release, deploying to Cloud Foundry or Kyma meant running the build and deploy steps yourself: cds add mta (or cds add helm, containerize for Kubernetes), then npm i, mbt build, and cf deploy or its Kyma equivalent. cds up (beta) now runs that sequence as one command, defaulting to Cloud Foundry or targeting Kubernetes with --to k8s.

Makes stale:

Tutorials that present cds add mta, then mbt build, then cf deploy as the only path. That sequence still works, but since March 2025 cds up does it in one command, and is still beta.
