Where it sits

Lives in
Provides
GeneratorsCAPGeneratorscapabilityGetting from nothing to a project that runs, and from a project that runs to one that has the piece you just decided you need. Two different moments: the first is a one-time decision about layout, the second recurs for the life of the project.Local developmentCAPLocal developmentcapabilityRunning the whole stack on a laptop against real bindings — the service, the UI and the routing in front of it — without deploying to see a change.DeploymentCAPDeploymentcapabilityGetting an application onto a runtime and keeping it there: build descriptors, deployment topology, service bindings and lifecycle operations. The target runtime determines how the application is packaged and configured.Native SAP HANA artifactsCAPNative SAP HANA artifactscapabilityUsing native SAP HANA database objects alongside an application’s generated data model, including objects and database features the modelling layer cannot express. Choosing a database is [database connectors](capability:database-connectors); changing an existing schema is [schema evolution](capability:schema-evolution).CI/CD pipelinesCAPCI/CD pipelinescapabilityA pipeline that builds, tests and delivers an application each time its source repository changes, with a build log that shows which step failed. [Deployment](capability:deployment) describes getting the build onto its target runtime.Plugin authoringCAPPlugin authoringcapabilityWriting a package that extends a framework or runtime rather than an application that uses it — a reusable extension loaded by its host, and the question you arrive at once solving a problem twice makes you want to solve it once for everyone.DebuggingCAPDebuggingcapabilitySeeing what running code did between an input arriving and a result coming out: which code ran, what the values were at each point, and why a value ended up as it did.Model visualisationCAPModel visualisationcapabilityTurning a data or code model into a readable picture of its entities, classes, fields and relationships, so a reader can understand the shape of a domain without opening every source file.Service integrationCAPService integrationcapabilityUsing a service that runs somewhere else as if it were one of your own: its API imported into the model, a proxy that turns a local query into the remote protocol, and a mock that stands in for it on a laptop. Distinct from [destinations](capability:destinations), which is how the address and the credentials are found, and from [replication](capability:replication), which is holding the data locally.

Conditions

LicenceSAP Developer License Agreement 3.2 CAP§ 1, 2from DeploymentA productive CAP customer application is deployed using materials covered by this agreement.
  • § 1 License. Productive customer applications are limited to SAP BTP or another SAP-licensed platform, and mass extraction to a non-SAP product is restricted except where solely required for SAP interoperability.
  • § 2 Intellectual Property. The agreement retains SAP's rights in the covered materials and limits making APIs, tools or software available to third parties, while preserving ownership of customer applications subject to SAP's underlying rights.

The CAP-specific agreement makes the deployment platform part of the permitted productive-use condition, so deployment choices need the applicable agreement checked rather than treated as purely technical.

SAP Developer License Agreement 3.2 CAP →
LicenceSAP Developer License Agreement 3.2 CAP§ 1, 2from Plugin authoringA plugin is developed or distributed for use with SAP CAP materials covered by the agreement.

The agreement expressly includes plug-ins among the SAP materials and section 2 addresses making APIs and tools available to third parties. A plugin's own open-source licence does not erase those separate use terms.

Tasks this contributes to4Beta

Open a CAP application through its router locallyA developer opens the application on a laptop at the address the App Router serves, logs in through the real authentication flow, and reaches the CAP service and the UI modules behind it the way a deployed request would.Node.jsShown workingthe documented two-process setup
What it does

cds add approuter puts the router in the project, and cds bind --exec -- npm start starts it on port 5000 with the credentials of the bound XSUAA instance, with the service running beside it under the hybrid profile.

Conditions

an XSUAA or SAP Identity service instance exists in the cloud and is bound with cds bind, since the credentials the router starts with come from that binding; the CAP application runs beside the router with the hybrid profile

Remaining work

Create the service instance and the service key in the cloud, bind them, and keep two processes running. The router itself needs no restart on a file change, since it serves static files or delegates to the backend service.

All options on the Local development page →
Pick up a CDS model change without restarting by handA developer edits a CDS file or a handler and the running service answers the next request against the changed model, without stopping and starting it.Node.js, JavaCoversthe watch loop (Node.js)
What it does

cds watch watches for changed files and restarts the Node.js server, so the next request is served against the saved model.

Remaining work

Nothing beyond running it. The restart follows any changed file the project holds, seed data included, which is the loop working as documented rather than a setting.

All options on the Local development page →
Run a CAP service against a cloud service instanceA service running on a laptop reads and writes through a service instance that exists in the cloud — a database, a destination, an authentication service — instead of through the local substitute, with nothing deployed.Node.js, JavaShown workingthe binding and the profile
What it does

cds bind records where the credentials can be obtained rather than the credentials themselves, and reaches a managed, a user-provided or a shared Cloud Foundry instance as well as a Kubernetes service binding or a plain secret. The run then starts under that profile: cds watch --profile hybrid on Node.js, and cds bind --exec mvn spring-boot:run for a CAP Java application.

Conditions

the developer is logged in to the target Cloud Foundry space or Kubernetes cluster, which is where cds bind resolves the instance from; the same profile name is used to create the binding and to run, since bindings are assigned to the hybrid profile by default

Remaining work

Create the instance and its service key in the cloud and keep the profile name consistent. The binding is resolved when the process starts, so a service only reachable through a tunnel still needs the tunnel.

All options on the Local development page →
Start a CAP service with nothing boundA CAP project whose model imports a remote service and whose endpoints are authenticated starts, serves and answers requests on a laptop with no service instance bound, no database provisioned and no upstream system reachable.Node.js, JavaCoversthe command that starts it
What it does

cds watch starts the server and the artifacts the in-memory SQLite database needs are created as it runs, with no build step in a Node.js project; cds mock runs the imported service in a separate process where one process is too far from the target setup.

Remaining work

Nothing beyond running it. The database is reset on each application start, so seed data is the only data a fresh run has.

All options on the Local development page →
