Don't "let it crash", is this the new CAP guideline?Don't "let it crash", is this the new CAP guideline?Dinu traces a change in error handling in CAP's Node.js runtime: @sap/cds@8.2.0 adds a cds.server.shutdown_on_uncaught_errors config flag, defaulting to true, but invoking an operation with an undefined variable no longer takes the server down, with or without the flag, where the same code crashed it on cds@6 and cds@7, and the author notes the old behaviour was already missing in cds@8.1. It still crashes with features.odata_new_adapter turned off to use the old OData parser, so it is the new OData adapter, like the REST adapter before it, that answers an uncaught error with a 500 instead of taking the process down.Dinu, published 2024-09-06
SAP: Email Functionality in SAP with a Custom Function ModuleSAP: Email Functionality in SAP with a Custom Function ModuleA custom ABAP function module, ZFM_SEND_EMAIL, sends mail through Business Communication Services' CL_BCS and CL_DOCUMENT_BCS classes, adding TO/CC/BCC recipients and multiple attachments by building the HTML document in application code on top of what CL_BCS delivers, which is how ABAP's notifications capability describes mail going out. The send sits in a TRY structure whose three CATCH blocks for CL_BCS's class-based exceptions are empty, so what reaches the caller is a BAPIRET2 table that BAPI_MESSAGE_GETDETAIL fills on the paths without an exception: no recipients given, sent to all, or not sent. That conversion into a caller-facing message table is what ABAP's error handling capability leaves to the application.Surendra_Karma, published 2024-12-16
SAP CAPv7 - Node.js Highlights and ExperiencesSAP CAPv7 - Node.js Highlights and ExperiencesAn account of upgrading a 100+ table CAP Node.js project from v6 to v7, working through breaking changes in @sap/cds 7: event handlers now always receive an array, service paths move under /odata/v4/... unless serve_on_root is set, and cds-serve replaces cds run. It goes deepest on the GraphQL plugin, @cap-js/graphql: the /graphql endpoint it serves, Composition results wrapped in a nodes connection, and offset-based pagination reached through OData's top and skip rather than GraphQL's own limit and offset.published 2023-08-03
Usage of Expand Entity in OData Service Consumption ModelUsage of Expand Entity in OData Service Consumption ModelExplains how to use OData's $Expand option when SAP BTP, ABAP Environment consumes a remote service through a generated client proxy, the way HTTP clients describes it, using stubs ABAP Development Tools for Eclipse generates from the service's $metadata. The expanded association only comes back from get_business_data when the caller supplies its own ABAP type that redeclares the association as a nested table, in place of the generated CDS entity type. The same workaround still applies from release 2311 on, where the consumption model generates flat ABAP types rather than abstract CDS entities.alrikx, published 2024-02-08

Graph intro series, part 8: Use Graph With OData v4Graph intro series, part 8: Use Graph With OData v4Part eight of the Graph intro series works through querying SAP Graph's unified business data graph over OData v4: inspecting the $metadata EDMX document for an entity type such as SalesQuote, then shaping the response with $select and nested $expand across navigation properties, and paging a collection with $filter, $orderby, $top and $skip. It stays with the protocol mechanics against the Graph sandbox endpoint rather than any one client library.florian_moritz, published 2024-03-19
SAP CAP(Cloud Application Programming)开发框架概述SAP CAP(Cloud Application Programming)开发框架概述A Chinese-language walkthrough of CAP built mainly from CAPire's own "About CAP" page: CDS entities, associations, compositions and aspects for data modelling, with an extend Books with @restrict: [{ grant:'WRITE', to:'admin' }] aspect as its authorization example; CQL and CQN queries shown against both a local service and OData's $select/$expand; and the service-and-event model — this.on, this.emit, srv.on — that carries CAP's async processing. It closes with the author's own setup: installing @sap/cds-dk, scaffolding a bookshop project with cds init, and running it with cds watch against local SQLite, mocked authentication and file-based messaging standing in for HANA Cloud, IAS and Kafka.ArthurYang, published 2024-01-07

Edge Integration Cell : Design, deploy and manage APIsEdge Integration Cell : Design, deploy and manage APIsWalks through creating an API artifact in API Management on the customer-managed Edge Integration Cell runtime, including the option to generate the artifact by importing an OpenAPI specification rather than from a URL or by hand. It then attaches an Authentication policy and a Quota step capped at four calls per minute, deploys, and shows both the resulting 401 and the quota-breach error in the Monitor logs. The author frames it as the first of a series on Edge Integration Cell's policies.published 2023-11-15
Part 2 – Empowering SAP BTP CAP Services through Open API Spec and Annotations for Effective Communication, Collaboration and GovernancePart 2 – Empowering SAP BTP CAP Services through Open API Spec and Annotations for Effective Communication, Collaboration and GovernanceWalks through generating an OpenAPI specification for a Node.js CAP service: installing cds-swagger-ui-express, bootstrapping it in server.js, a sample CDS data model with associations and compositions, and the YUML diagram and endpoint details the Open API Preview renders in Business Application Studio. Also shows gating the Swagger UI behind a user-defined environment variable so it is served in development and QA subaccounts but excluded from the production deployment on Cloud Foundry. Second of a three-part series; the first covers the concepts and the third goes deeper into annotations.mohit_bansal3, published 2023-05-24
Part 3 – Empowering SAP BTP CAP Services through Open API Spec and Annotations for Effective Communication, Collaboration and GovernancePart 3 – Empowering SAP BTP CAP Services through Open API Spec and Annotations for Effective Communication, Collaboration and GovernanceThe closing part of a three-post series applies OData @Capabilities annotations — TopSupported, SkipSupported, CountRestrictions, UpdateRestrictions, DeleteRestrictions, FilterRestrictions, SelectSupport, SortRestrictions, SearchRestrictions, InsertRestrictions, ReadRestrictions and NavigationRestrictions — to three sample CDS entities (Purchase Order, Business Partner, Product) and shows the generated OpenAPI document changing with each one. The point it builds toward: the spec is a direct readout of the model and its annotations, not something edited by hand afterward.mohit_bansal3, published 2023-05-24

SAP Event Mesh: S4 HANA On-Prem and SAP CI(BTP IS) through WebSocket and WebhooksSAP Event Mesh: S4 HANA On-Prem and SAP CI(BTP IS) through WebSocket and WebhooksA step-by-step walkthrough of wiring Event Mesh to publish and consume events between an on-premise S/4HANA system and Cloud Integration, contrasting persistent queues (one subscriber, kept until consumed) against unpersisted topics, and WebSocket's AMQP transport against webhook delivery for the same queue. Two tested findings support it: a queue consumer running in continuous consumption mode receives a message ahead of a webhook on the same topic, and a message stays queued and is retried (almost 8770 times in under a minute, in the author's test) until the consumer processes it successfully.FarooqAhmed, published 2023-10-03
Empowering Your Data Analytics with GPT-3 and SAP CAP IntegrationEmpowering Your Data Analytics with GPT-3 and SAP CAP IntegrationFree text in, SQL out, answer back in a sentence — the model writes the query, CAP runs it, and the model turns the rows into prose. Written in the GPT-3 window, so the model access has dated, but the three-step shape has not, and it is a different bet from retrieval: nothing is embedded, the schema is the context.Former Member, published 2023-03-10

#BTP #SAPCAP: Quirky Nuggets (N01-N02)#BTP #SAPCAP: Quirky Nuggets (N01-N02)Walks through two CAP gotchas: the on/before/after phases of custom event handlers, shown with an after handler whose edits only reach the result when the handler returns an object or array, never a primitive; and the @assert.unique annotation, which builds a database uniqueness constraint from the model. It starts from why microservices are decoupled at all, places Event Mesh among the four broker services BTP offers, and then works through what changes when the publisher and the consumer are multitenant.ale_biagi, published 2024-12-19
Integrating SAP S/4HANA Invoicing with KSeF Using SAP Event Mesh and CAPIntegrating SAP S/4HANA Invoicing with KSeF Using SAP Event Mesh and CAPA concrete regulatory deadline rather than a demo topic: every Polish invoice has to pass through KSeF, the national e-invoice platform, and this proposes the route — S/4HANA business events onto Event Mesh, a CAP application consuming them and talking to KSeF. Short, and offered as an example to argue with.Yahor, published 2024-08-29
SAP Advanced Event Mesh – Manage Advance Event Mesh with API’sSAP Advanced Event Mesh – Manage Advance Event Mesh with API’sMaps the API surface of SAP Advanced Event Mesh: the REST API(v2) for administering the cloud environment and its event broker services (with legacy v0/v1 noted as discouraged), SEMP(v2) for provisioning and operating a single event broker, and the open protocols and standards it supports for consuming events, among them JMS, OpenMAMA, REST, AMQP 1.0, MQTT and WebSocket. Covers how each API authenticates — bearer tokens with scoped permissions for REST API(v2), username/password or OAuth2/certificate-based for SEMP(v2) — and where to find the connection details and reference documentation for each.Nils_Lorenz, published 2024-08-28

Application to Application IntegrationApplication to Application IntegrationSAP's reference architecture for application-to-application integration, where messages carrying transactional data such as sales orders pass between business applications in near real time and each one triggers the next process step. When the sender's and receiver's APIs do not match, Cloud Integration in SAP Integration Suite sits between them to determine receivers, filter, map structures and convert protocols, which is the ground of integration flows; SAP Connectivity service, Cloud Connector and SAP Destination service reach on-premise receivers, and the edge integration cell runtime keeps processing inside a customer-managed landscape where compliance requires it. Direct exchange without middleware is allowed when the two APIs already align, asynchronous communication is the default the page states, and it is drawn at the level of the pattern, following SAP's Integration Solution Advisory Methodology, without designing any one flow.published 2024-08-01
Business to Business IntegrationBusiness to Business IntegrationSAP's reference architecture for business-to-business integration, the exchange of business documents with customers, suppliers and other trading partners over agreed standards such as EDIFACT, ANSI X.12 and IDoc and protocols such as AS2. Its design-time steps are Cloud Integration in SAP Integration Suite, the predefined content of SAP Business Accelerator Hub, and Integration Advisor, which defines message implementation and mapping guidelines and generates runtime artifacts from them; Trading Partner Management then turns partner profiles into agreements pushed to the Partner Directory, and generic integration flows on Cloud Integration read those agreements at runtime to exchange messages with each partner. The alternatives it names are API-based exchange where an industry has standardised its APIs, and SAP Business Network with the managed gateway for spend management in place of connecting partners one by one.published 2024-08-01
Connect Business Processes with SAP Master Data IntegrationConnect Business Processes with SAP Master Data IntegrationSAP's reference architecture for keeping master data such as materials, business partners and cost centres consistent across applications with SAP Master Data Integration, a central hub that stores every change in an event log and distributes it to the solutions that consume it. Cloud Integration in SAP Integration Suite carries what the hub does not reach, SAP solutions it does not yet support and third-party or on-premise systems, through an SAP Master Data Integration adapter, which is where the design meets integration flows; newer SAP S/4HANA releases connect to the hub without it. Consolidation, data quality and central governance are outside the architecture and left to SAP Master Data Governance, and SAP Master Data Integration itself has no entry in the atlas yet.published 2024-08-01
Integrating SAP CPI with Microsoft SharePoint: Part 2- Creating an API to Upload Files to SharePointIntegrating SAP CPI with Microsoft SharePoint: Part 2- Creating an API to Upload Files to SharePointPart two of a three-part series builds a custom HTTP API in Cloud Integration: an HTTP adapter receives the upload, an exchange property derives a folder path from header values, and the SharePoint receiver adapter writes the file with OAuth2 authorization code authentication. It also covers exposing that flow through API Management and enabling streaming so larger files bypass its default 10 MB payload limit.siddhartha_routh, published 2024-11-05
Resend HTTP messages with configured pause and fixed max iteration followed by error handlingResend HTTP messages with configured pause and fixed max iteration followed by error handlingBuilds a retry pattern for a Cloud Integration HTTP Receiver call by splitting the request-reply step into its own local sub-process, which loops on the response code — up to a fixed five iterations, each after a configured pause — and routes to an exception sub-process that attaches the message processing log through Groovy once the count is exceeded or another error occurs. The design is the author's own alternative to the platform's retry pattern and inbuilt HTTP Receiver Adapter retry option, built for cases where neither applies; SAP Event Mesh and SAP Advanced Event Mesh are named only as the queue-based alternative the author considered and set aside.Aman_V, published 2024-01-03

SAP PI Migration to BTP Integration Suite Patterns and learning experiencesSAP PI Migration to BTP Integration Suite Patterns and learning experiencesWalks through the integration patterns an SAP PI migration project moved onto SAP Cloud Integration iFlows — API Management proxies fronting calls into on-premise SAP systems over XI/SOAP via Cloud Connector, SFTP transfers, and eventing routes — and the operational lessons from running it: sizing JMS queues, choosing exactly-once JMS queues over Cloud Integration's Data Store for XI receiver adapters and at-least-once JMS for XI sender adapters, and workarounds for gaps in the migration tooling. The API Management proxies handle JWT validation against a non-SAP identity provider, IP filtering and OData-to-OpenAPI conversion in front of the iFlows.saikrishna_kalivarapu2, published 2024-12-04
SFTP File Level Checks in SAP BTP Cloud IntegrationSFTP File Level Checks in SAP BTP Cloud IntegrationFor an SFTP flow in Cloud Integration that an external party triggers, the post recommends polling with SFTP Poll-Enrich rather than relying on the Sender SFTP adapter and its built-in scheduler, and because Poll-Enrich polls one file per trigger, the design is a Main flow whose Looping Process Call repeatedly invokes a Local Integration Process that holds the Poll-Enrich step. On top of that design, it adds four router conditions, each checked against SAP_PollEnrichMessageFound, CamelLoopIndex, CamelFileName or CamelFileLength: no file found on the first poll, no more files left mid-loop, more than one file present when exactly one should be processed, and an empty file, each letting the flow terminate or raise an exception instead of failing on an unhandled read.Srishti_Gupta, published 2024-09-16
Microsoft Sentinel for SAP goes agentlessMicrosoft Sentinel for SAP goes agentlessExplains how Microsoft Sentinel for SAP's new agentless data connector drops its Docker-based collector agent by reusing an existing SAP Cloud Connector setup together with SAP Integration Suite: on SAP NetWeaver 750 and later, a small set of RFC function modules must be reachable from Integration Suite, added as an RFC connection in the subaccount's Destinations maintenance view, with a user authorised to call them (RFC connectivity). It names four BTP services: SAP Personal Data Manager, SAP Data Retention Manager, SAP Data Privacy Integration and SAP Audit Log service. Only the first is described, as a service running in the Cloud Foundry environment that finds data subjects across one or more applications and services, makes requests on an individual's behalf about their personal information and forwards them for handling, and notifies individuals which of their personal information is being used or sends them a copy of their record by email; the CAP-side annotations and PDM's own application features follow in Part 2 and Part 3.Ajit_K_Panda, published 2023-03-18

Covers the xsuaa trust arrangement and service binding that let the standalone PDM application call back into the CAP service to read and manage that data. PDM stores none of the personal data itself, only the requests and access logs, which an administrator downloads through the separate Data Transport app. It builds on the annotation model the first two parts introduce, so what it demonstrates is PDM's own delivered UI rather than anything a CAP application must build itself.Ajit_K_Panda, published 2023-03-18

Argues against deriving any of the three from personal data, because they appear in read-only log files and other traces, some applications do not allow an ID change at all, and DevOps staff with access to those logs would otherwise see personal data they are not allowed to see. Recommends generating values without personal data, in uuid format, for technical integrations such as SAML or OIDC flows and SCIM-based replication, and keeping attributes like an email or display name for logon aliases and for what a user interface shows; notes that Cloud Identity Services already generates the SCIM ID and Global User ID in uuid format for each record.1Gunnar, published 2023-09-12
Why SAP Cloud Identity Matters for SAP Task Center: It’s About Trust and Global User IDWhy SAP Cloud Identity Matters for SAP Task Center: It’s About Trust and Global User IDA step-by-step configuration walkthrough for wiring SAP Cloud Identity Services as the trust and user-correlation layer behind SAP Task Center: establishing Identity Authentication as the sole trusted identity provider for the BTP subaccount, and generating the Global User ID — carried in the token's user_uuid claim rather than the SAML name identifier — that Task Center uses to match logged-in users to their tasks. It also covers syncing that ID between Microsoft Entra ID, the Identity Directory and SAP S/4HANA through Identity Provisioning jobs, and the principal-propagation trust the cloud connector needs to pass it through to an on-premise task provider.ivelinakiryakov, published 2024-11-25
[Part - 1] Enrich CAP based Services with Behaviors using Annotations[Part - 1] Enrich CAP based Services with Behaviors using AnnotationsWalks through CDS annotations that add behaviour beyond CRUD: @readonly and @insertonly take away write, update or delete on an entity or element, each shown with the OData metadata it generates. @mandatory, @assert.unique, @assert.integrity, @assert.format and @assert.range then enforce input checks that @sap/cds runs on write, with the SQL or HANA constraint @assert.unique compiles to and the error code each rejection returns. It names @restrict and @requires but defers them, calling authorization too large a topic for this post.published 2023-01-28
For Input validation, the catch is that once the constrained property is nested, @assert.unique must name it by its model dot path (assignment.type) rather than the flattened column data modelling compiles it to (assignment_type).published 2023-06-05

CAPVAL: A project is bornCAPVAL: A project is bornThis second CAPVAL post announces CAPVAL version 2.0, made compatible with CAP v8 after breaking changes there, with the fix shown as a custom cds.middlewares.after error handler. It restates the plugin's @validation.message annotation alongside standard annotations such as @mandatory as the input validation mechanic the project builds on, and the release otherwise adds automated tests and release-automation GitHub Actions rather than new annotations.published 2024-08-26
Extend SAP Cloud Application Programming Model(CAP) Validations with the CAPVAL PluginExtend SAP Cloud Application Programming Model(CAP) Validations with the CAPVAL PluginThe complaint first: the built-in annotations are good for data integrity and poor at telling the user what went wrong, and there is no way to reuse a rule. capval, the plugin the post announces, adds @validation.message alongside the standard annotations rather than replacing them, and @validation.handler for a check written as a class. Published in January 2024, before the 1.2.0 line the README now pairs with @sap/cds 8.0.0 and above; the two annotations it shows are the two the README still documents.published 2024-01-09
Information Map – Introduction Series: Graph in SAP Integration SuiteInformation Map – Introduction Series: Graph in SAP Integration SuiteIntroduces Graph, an enhancement to API Management within SAP Integration Suite that gives developers a single API onto an organisation's business systems, modelled as one semantically connected business data graph, later renamed API Composition. Splits the work between an administrator, who enables SAP BTP destinations to the backend systems and builds the business data graph, and a developer, who explores it in the Graph Navigator tool and builds an application against the resulting Graph API.published 2024-02-21
Kyma Integration with SAP Cloud Logging. Part 2: Let's ship some tracesKyma Integration with SAP Cloud Logging. Part 2: Let's ship some tracesWalks through shipping traces from SAP BTP, Kyma runtime to SAP Cloud Logging: a Kyma TracePipeline resource pointed at the service binding's OTLP endpoint, an Istio Telemetry resource that sets the mesh-wide sampling percentage, and Cloud Logging's Trace Analytics view to filter the resulting spans by service name or request ID. For a multitenant JavaScript CAP application it instruments with @cap-js/telemetry, naming the npm packages to add, and covers Cloud Native Buildpacks and manual Istio header propagation for services outside CAP.gabbi, published 2024-04-19

Using Github Actions to Deploy a CAP App (MTA)Using Github Actions to Deploy a CAP App (MTA)Walks through a GitHub Actions workflow that deploys a CAP project's MTA to SAP BTP, Cloud Foundry: secrets and variables for the BTP credentials, a push-triggered job that checks out the repository, installs Node.js, runs npx mbt build and then cf deploy against the target org and space, plus an optional test job and a note on reusable workflow templates. Written because capire's own CI/CD guide is Docker-based and the linked sample is marked broken, so this fills the gap with the plain cds add mta / mbt build / cf deploy sequence driven by a pipeline instead of a terminal. That sequence is exactly what cds up, beta since @sap/cds-dk 8.9.0 (March 2025), now runs as one command, so the pipeline mechanics still hold but the three manual build-and-deploy steps it scripts are no longer the only way there.Christopher_Ketzler, published 2024-08-26

It also walks the MTA build and cf deploy commands used to push the app, scaffolded with generator-easy-ui5, to BTP.Jacky_Liu1, published 2023-06-13

#BTP #SAPCAP: Quirky Nuggets (N05-N06)#BTP #SAPCAP: Quirky Nuggets (N05-N06)On SAP BTP, Cloud Foundry Runtime, a one-shot PostgreSQL db-deployer app can be restarted by the platform's default port-type health check inside its 60-second timeout, re-running the deploy and duplicating data in the PostgreSQL database; setting health-check-type to process or http, via cf commands or the app's mta.yaml parameters, avoids it. In CAP, a remote service's entities are imported and consumed through cds.connect.to and queried via a projection, but its functions and actions cannot be projected: they must be redefined in the consuming service's own interface, with the handler forwarding the call to the remote proxy.published 2023-07-27
From Application Logging to Cloud Logging: Service Innovation GuideFrom Application Logging to Cloud Logging: Service Innovation GuideSAP Cloud Logging replaces SAP Application Logging service, moving each customer from a shared multitenant stack to a dedicated, fully isolated one, and this guide sets out what changes with the move: a deployment per compliance region instead of per Cloud Foundry landscape, SAML/IDP-based authentication instead of Cloud Foundry-bound auth, retention that is configurable instead of fixed at seven days, and hourly capacity-unit pricing instead of fixed-size monthly plans. It also states the deprecation timeline for logging on BTP: SAP Application Logging closes to new or renewed CPEA contracts after 2025-07-31, while contracts signed before that date keep their entitlement until their next renewal.Hariharan-Gandhi, published 2024-11-22
From Application Logging to Cloud Logging: Service Migration GuideFrom Application Logging to Cloud Logging: Service Migration GuideA six-step guide to moving off SAP Application Logging service for SAP BTP onto SAP Cloud Logging: plan the instance layout, set up an Identity Authentication Service tenant for single sign-on to the new service, bind applications to both services in parallel so log data flows to each for comparison, then deprovision the old service once Cloud Logging holds the retained history. It covers what the logging libraries need so custom fields reach both services during the overlap: the CF Node.js library detects both bindings itself from v6.5.0, while the CF Java library has to be configured to retain each custom field at top level. It also gives the deprecation date SAP published for Application Logging under CPEA contracts, 31 July 2025.Hariharan-Gandhi, published 2024-11-22

It walks through a worked Logging example: xco_log=>factory->create_new_log opens a log keyed by object, subobject and external ID, logger->add_message appends a typed message, and logger->add_last_symsg attaches a problem class and level of detail for later traceability.tamitdassharma, published 2024-11-27
