Overview

InCAPassessed

Working in CDS with the editor helping rather than treating it as text — completion, go-to-definition, inline errors, refactoring and preview, driven by a language server rather than reimplemented per editor.

SAP SHIPSby design
Node.js →

cds-textmate-grammar The TextMate grammar for the CDS language, which highlights .cds files where the CDS language server does not run, most visibly in GitHub's own file viewer through Linguist.

@sap/ux-cds-odata-language-server-extension Adds the OData annotation features to @sap/vscode-cds, the CDS plug-in for Visual Studio Code: completion, micro-snippets, diagnostics, vocabulary documentation, Go to Definition and an i18n check inside a .cds file.

Java →

cds-textmate-grammar The TextMate grammar for the CDS language, which highlights .cds files where the CDS language server does not run, most visibly in GitHub's own file viewer through Linguist.

Not covered: It stops at those editors. The language server speaks LSP, so any editor could consume it — but packaging that for Zed, Eclipse, Neovim or anything else is left to whoever wants it there.

THE COMMUNITY ADDS

Packaging of the language server for editors the core does not cover: zed-cds-extension wires it into Zed and cds-eclipse-plugin adds CDS to Eclipse. @saptools/hana-lens compiles a workspace's CAP packages into one CSN cache for lookups.

InABAPassessed

On the ABAP door the editor is ABAP Development Tools in Eclipse, working against a live system: what it shows comes from the application server, so an extension to it often has a backend part installed in ABAP.

SAP SHIPS
Standard ABAP →

ABAP Development Tools for Eclipse SAP's Eclipse plugins for ABAP: source, dictionary and CDS editors, Project Explorer, Outline and ABAP Unit, calling ADT resources on the connected system.

ABAP Cloud →

ABAP Development Tools for Eclipse SAP's Eclipse plugins for ABAP: source, dictionary and CDS editors, Project Explorer, Outline and ABAP Unit, calling ADT resources on the connected system.

Not covered: At the views SAP ships. Object tags and a call hierarchy for ABAP come as Eclipse plugins with a backend installed through abapGit, and IDE actions cannot yet be saved in Git, so they are created by hand in each system.

THE COMMUNITY ADDS

SAP also ships ABAP Development Tools for VS Code. Community extensions add Eclipse plugins with an ABAP backend such as abap-tags-ui and abap-call-hierarchy-ui, VS Code extensions that reach a system over ADT such as ABAP remote filesystem, syntax highlighting such as ABAP Syntax Highlighting, and @arc-mcp/adt-ls, an SDK over the language server inside SAP's VS Code tools.

InBTP/BAIPassessed

On BTP the editor is a cloud service: SAP Business Application Studio opens a preconfigured dev space in a browser, with code and graphical editors, terminal access and deployment in one place and no software installed on the developer's machine.

SAP SHIPS

SAP ships the editor on BTP as a cloud service: SAP Business Application Studio, described as the next generation of SAP Web IDE, has code and graphical editors and terminal access in a browser, and SAP Build Code puts code editors integrated with Git and CI/CD beside visual modelling tools for CAP applications.

Not covered: In SAP's cloud, reached from a browser with no software installed on the local machine; SAP Build Code states its scope as SAPUI5, SAP Fiori, mobile and CAP applications running on the Cloud Foundry runtime.

SAP Web IDE Full-Stack is present too; its record carries a notice that the service, in the region marked "Neo", is being removed from the Eligible Cloud Services List on December 31, 2028.

THE COMMUNITY ADDS

Tooling for the local editor that works from a BTP binding: @saptools/sqltools turns the HANA service binding of a Cloud Foundry app into a SQLTools connection in VS Code.

InUI5assessed

In a UI5 project the editor has to know the framework's control metadata: which aggregations a control takes, which properties and events it has, and which controller method an XML event handler names. SAP's UI5 Language Assistant reads that metadata for the XML view; the controller code beside it is the other half of the same project.

SAP SHIPS

SAP publishes UI5 Language Assistant for VS Code, driven by SAPUI5 metadata it downloads lazily. In XML views and fragments it completes classes, aggregations, properties, events and enum values filtered by the parent aggregation's type, validates unknown tags and attributes, duplicate IDs, aggregation cardinality and binding info, shows hover tooltips, navigates from a view to the controller files it references and formats views and fragments with prettier; in manifest.json it completes and validates.

Not covered: At XML views and the manifest, for SAP's own controls: its README states that custom controls are not supported and get no completion, its validations and their severity are fixed and cannot be configured, and it lists no completion inside controller JavaScript or TypeScript.

THE COMMUNITY ADDS

ui5plugin, the SAPUI5 Extension for VS Code, covers the controller side too: completion in XML views, JavaScript, TypeScript and manifest.json, definitions from an XML event handler to its controller method, CodeLens, a rename provider and i18n export, with diagnostics from ui5plugin-linter.

What changed — and what it makes stale1
@sap/cds-dk 8.8.0, CAP

Before this release, the CDS language server and its VS Code plugin ran on the original CDS parser only. @sap/cds-dk 8.8.0 shipped a new parser — smaller install, faster parsing, better completion — and let the VS Code plugin opt into it via a setting, while the old parser stayed the default until cds9.

Makes stale:

Advice that CDS editor completion and parse speed cannot improve without switching editors. The new parser was opt-in from this release (cds.compiler.useOldParser to stay on the old one) and became the default in cds9.
