ABAP Development Tools for Eclipse

SAP's Eclipse plugins for ABAP: source, dictionary and CDS editors, Project Explorer, Outline and ABAP Unit, calling ADT resources on the connected system.

ABAP development tools for Eclipse is the Eclipse-based development environment for ABAP. One client installed on the developer's machine connects to several back-end systems of different releases; an ABAP project is that connection, a container on the front end for objects that live in the back end. A classic project is an on-premise system, an ABAP cloud project is SAP BTP ABAP environment. The plugins add ABAP source editors, dictionary and CDS editors, Project Explorer, Outline, Tasks, Problems and ABAP Unit, all against ADT resources. ABAP Development Tools for VS Code is the same back end in a second editor.

Parts and add-ons6

IDE extensions5
ABAP Call Hierarchyindependently maintainedAn Eclipse plugin that shows which members a class method, function module or subroutine calls, read from its own ADT backend in the system and published on a beta update site only.
ABAP Code Searchindependently maintainedAn Eclipse plugin that searches ABAP sources from the Eclipse search dialog, either in the client over the ADT API or inside the system through its own backend.
ConsiderationFunctional boundaryOn a system below ABAP 7.51, or one without a connected HANA database, the client-based mode does not run, and the server-based mode is only available where the abap-code-search-tools backend is installed in the system.
ABAP Search and Analysis Toolsindependently maintainedAn Eclipse plugin with an object search dialog over repository objects and a view that analyses CDS views top-down and answers where-used questions, fed by its own ADT backend in the system.
ConsiderationFunctional boundaryOn a system where the abap-search-tools backend is not installed: the plugin lists it as a precondition, and the beta update site expects that backend's dev branch in particular.
ABAP Tagsindependently maintainedAn Eclipse plugin for putting arbitrary tags on repository objects, with a Tag Manager view, tagged object search and tag import and export, served by its own ADT backend in the system.
Cloud ALM Link for ADTindependently maintainedAn Eclipse plugin that shows the transports and SAP Cloud ALM features behind an ABAP object, and turns Cloud ALM IDs in source comments into links.
ConsiderationFunctional boundaryAn Eclipse installation older than the 2026-03 release, or a Java below 21, cannot take it: both are listed prerequisites, and 2026-03 is named as the oldest release the current ADT installs on. The tenant, region, client ID and client secret are entered per installation in Eclipse preferences, so each developer configures the Cloud ALM connection in their own IDE.
MCP servers1
EPOD ADT MCP Serverindependently maintainedAn MCP server for ABAP that runs inside ABAP Development Tools for Eclipse on the ADT session of each connected project, with a standalone mode that runs with no IDE open.
ConsiderationFunctional boundaryIn the Eclipse mode the server lives in a developer's IDE, binds to 127.0.0.1 and answers any request carrying an `Origin` header with HTTP 403, so a pipeline or a remote agent has nothing to reach; the standalone mode on the runtime of the ADT for VS Code extension is the documented route with no IDE open. A new connection starts in write mode, so the 11 write tools are live against a connected system until someone presses Toggle Read-Only. The dropins route for the two bundles is documented as untested.
